Livestock and Fisheries Development

The Commissioner of Livestock and Fisheries Hon. Haruna Nuhu Dukku attended a stakeholder meeting with a powerful delegation from Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) preparatory to the construction of a new model of Cattle Ranching in Sheyi Grazing Reserve.

The meeting which took place in Minna also had the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr. Wasa Jonathan among other senior staff of the Ministry in attendance.

It will be recalled that in the early September 2020, Hon. Haruna Nuhu Dukku alongside the Permanent Secretary undertook an official visit to Abuja the aftermath of which only Niger and Kaduna States were nominated to serve as pilot states for the implementation of the National Livestock Transformation Agenda with technical support from FAO.

It is expected that by next month, January 2021, FAO will mobilize to site for commencement of execution of the project. Among the facilities to be constructed at the over 3-hectre cattle ranch include, Irrigation site, boreholes, milk collection centre, solar power installations and parking lot.

FAO opened its office in Nigeria in 1978 and has therefore been operational for over 40 years in the country. The FAO support and activities focused on providing technical assistance and policy advice for the development of crops, livestock, fisheries and forestry sub sectors, with due emphasis given to institutional capacity building and development of local skills and expertise to ensure sustainability.

In the same vein, the Commissioner also undertook an inspection tour to the construction site of a modernised Live-bird market and slaughtering centre at the Kure Ultra Modern Market and Chanchaga Irrigation Site in Minna.

At the Kure Market, Hon. Dukku alongside the Permanent Secretary were received and conducted round the facility by the Chairman of the Bird Sellers Group. Dukku however, expressed satisfaction over the progress of work as the work has attained near 90% completion.

Other facilities made available at the Live-bird market include motorised borehole with 6,000-litre capacity overhead tanks, toilet facilities, bird cages, among others.

Niger State Government has provided 30 metric tons (30,000kg) of improved Sesame Seed to Farmers to reduce poverty and increase food security in the State.

His Excellency Governor Abubakar Sani Bello stated this at the official flag off of distribution of sesame seeds to Farmers at local government secretariat Lapai recently.

Represented by the Hon. Commissioner Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development Alh. Haliru Zakari Jikantoro, the governor said, the state government’s renewed determination to diversify the economic base of the State is given great emphasis and focus to the Agricultural sector as a deliberate policy to provide sustainable employment opportunities and economic prosperity    for it’s citizens.

Alhaji Abubakar Sani Bello stated that the 30 metric tons (30,000kg) of improved seeds to Farmers is to support commercial production of the crop in the state. Stressing that the intervention is expected to add impetus to the renewed drive by the present administration to explore various opportunities in the sesame crop value chain to drive investment and agro industrialization of the state.

The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr. Idris Usman Gbogan stated that it is the State Government’s aim to support Agricultural objective in improving sesame seed Farm among other cash crops.

He pointed out that the ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has the mandate of ensuring that our Farmers have access to quality inputs particularly, Fertilizers and improved seeds which are very vital for higher productivity and  consequently higher income emphasizing that the present administration under the leadership of  Governor Alh (Dr) Abubakar Sani Bello is now determined more than ever before to support the development of the Agricultural sector, Which according to him ,hold the key to the economic prosperity of the State.

Also speaking at the event, the state chairman Sesame Farmers Association, Idris Mohammad assured Governor Abubakar Sani Bello of its member’s preparedness to utilize the intervention.

In his remarks, His Royal Highness Alh. Umar Tafida Bago III Emir of Lapai applaud the state government for taking the decision of assisting Sesame   Farmers and called on them to look into establishing a sesame aggregation center in the State.

Paper presentation on ways to improve competitiveness of Niger State Commodity Export
